Directorate of Municipal Administration
The Urban Development Department of the Government of Maharashtra is catering the needs of Urban Population through Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats.
The Directorate of Municipal Administration working under Urban Development Department-2, is a state level office for coordinating activities of Municipal Councils and Nagar panchayats in the state of Maharashtra.
The history of urban local bodies (commonly called Municipalities) in Maharashtra State dates back to more than a century. Based on the population, Urban local bodies are classified into various categories like
1. Municipal Corporations which are further categorized as A Class, B Class, C Class and D class municipal corporations.
2. Municipal Councils which are further categorized as A Class, B Class, C Class municipal councils.
3. Nagar Panchayats.
The Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats are governed by THE MAHARASHTRA MUNICIPAL COUNCILS, NAGAR PANCHAYATS AND INDUSTRIAL TOWNSHIPS ACT, 1965.
Currently 416 Urban Local Bodies are there in Maharashtra, out of which 28 are Municipal Corporations, 16 are A Class, 75 are B Class Municipal Councils,154 are C Class Municipal Councils and 143 are Nagar Panchayats.
